The $14 Rubber Seal That Nearly Cost Us Our Biggest Contract

The listing just said "rubber seal." I knew I should verify the material spec, but I thought, "what are the odds?" Well, the odds caught up with me. By month four, the seal had cracked, hardened, and lost all flexibility. What I mean is, it wasn't sealing anything — you could see daylight between the door and the frame.

The Emergency Hunt

The short version: know what material your application needs, verify it on the spec sheet, and don't assume "rubber" is a single thing.

And one more question I get asked a lot: is rubber biodegradable? The answer depends on the type. Natural rubber, which comes from rubber trees, can biodegrade — but slowly, over years or decades depending on conditions. Synthetic rubbers like EPDM? Practically speaking, they don't biodegrade in a landfill time frame. That's not necessarily a bad thing — it means they're durable — but it means disposal and recycling matter. Our old seals now go to a rubber recycling program, not the dump.

The Policy Change

After this incident, we implemented what I call our "materials-first" policy:

  • Check the actual spec sheet before buying any rubber product.
  • Prefer suppliers who can verify material composition.
  • Physically inspect all seals and chocks every quarter — not just check a box.
  • Replace at the first sign of cracking or hardening, not at the next scheduled date.

That $14 seal ended up costing us about $2,800 in total: the emergency trip, the morning of lost productivity, two hours of management time, and the risk of losing a contract.
