But there's also silicone rubber—a whole different animal. Silicone has a silicon-oxygen backbone rather than the carbon backbone of most organic rubbers. That lets it handle extreme temperatures and UV exposure well. For a roof coating, silicone can be great. For a gasket under metal flashing? Maybe not. It tends to have lower tear strength than EPDM, so it's easier to damage during installation.

What Is Silicone Rubber, Exactly?

Silicone rubber is a synthetic elastomer made from silicone polymer chains. The key difference is that it's based on silicon, not carbon. That gives it a few advantages:
- Broad temperature range—it stays flexible from about -60°C to over 200°C, depending on the formulation.
- Strong resistance to UV, ozone, and weathering.
- Low toxicity, so it's common in food-contact and medical products.
But "better" depends on the job. Silicone tends to have lower tear strength and a higher price than EPDM. For a roof membrane that gets walked on, EPDM is the workhorse. For a high-heat appliance gasket, silicone might be the only sensible option. They are different tools, not competitors in a beauty contest.
What I'd Do Differently Next Time
If you're an admin buyer who is suddenly responsible for rubber parts, here's what I'd tell you:
Ask for the data sheet, not just the dimensions. A real EPDM gasket supplier should be able to tell you the durometer (Shore A hardness) and something about compression set. If they can't, that's a red flag. The second vendor we used sent a material spec sheet before I even asked—or rather, they asked me what specs I needed. That's the right kind of vendor.
Don't buy from a photo. A black rubber strip looks like any other black rubber strip until it's sitting on a curb in direct sun. The difference is in the compound and the cure, not the shape.
Know the material supplier's history. When I look at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co, I'm not just thinking about tires. They've spent decades mixing rubber compounds to survive heat, cold, friction, and weather. But the real cost was the lesson, and it stuck.

It probably costs a little more to do it that way. But I stopped treating that as "more expensive." The cheap route already billed me, and it charged interest.
