I'm the person who orders the stuff nobody thinks about until it leaks. Office administrator for a 140-person facility. But the better answer is: it depends on the compound. And compound formulation is where suppliers either prove themselves or get exposed.

Say you need a rubber gasket for an equipment enclosure. A generic TPR gasket might be fine at room temperature. The same shape in a different TPR formula might handle heat, cold, or oil exposure far better. Same durometer. Same color. Same price. Different material. If a supplier can't tell me the base polymer and the additive package, I don't count that as a specification.

I also ask about claims like “recyclable.” Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims need to be substantiated. “TPR is recyclable” sounds nice, but I need to know if a recycling stream actually exists for it. If the vendor doesn't know, that's useful information too.

Rubber Gaskets Are Not a Place for Surprises

If you've ever bought a rubber gasket and watched it crack within a year, you know the feeling. It's not just the cost of the part. It's the downtime, the leak, the phone call to the plant manager.

I once ordered 40 gaskets from a low-cost vendor. They looked fine in the bag. On installation, three cracked before the bolts were even torqued. The “shelf life” turned out to be six months. The line went down for two hours. The quote looked great. The cost was not.

That was when I started demanding the basics:

  • Exact compound: nitrile, EPDM, neoprene, FKM, TPR?
  • Durometer hardness: 50, 70, 90 Shore A?
  • Working temperature range and fluid compatibility?
  • Total price: including setup, tooling, packaging, and freight?

Three things I now require before I buy any rubber part: material spec, performance limits, and total cost. In that order.

And on total cost—transparency matters. I've learned to ask what's not included before I ask what the price is. Setup fees, die-cutting charges, expedite premiums. Just like USPS publishes its rates (according to usps.com, a First-Class Mail letter is $0.73 as of January 2025), I expect a supplier to itemize shipping and handling. It shouldn't be a mystery. If a quote arrives with “plus handling” and no number, that's a red flag.

The Rubber Restorer Trap

Several years ago, someone convinced me that a rubber restorer would fix the aging seals on a piece of equipment. It sounded a lot cheaper than replacing them. So I bought it. I spent an afternoon wiping dark liquid onto cracked, stiff rubber. It looked better for about a week. Then the crack came back, the stiffness returned, and the equipment still leaked.

That lesson stuck: a rubber restorer can condition the surface and temporarily improve appearance. That's it. It does not resurrect degraded material. If a rubber gasket has lost its elasticity, no topical product is going to put that flexibility back. It's a maintenance product, not a structural repair.

Honestly, I'm not sure why the marketing around restorers is so vague. My best guess is that “restore” sells better than “condition.” But this is where I apply the FTC rule: per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims must be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated. If a restorer says it will “restore old rubber to factory condition,” I want test data. If a supplier can't produce it, I assume it's hype.

Fair point. If you need a custom gasket cut from a specific sheet of neoprene tomorrow, you probably want a local gasket fabricator, not a tire manufacturer. I still use dedicated fabricators. Fast turnaround and custom sizes can be worth it.

But I think drawing that line too sharply is a mistake. Rubber is rubber at the material level. Gaskets, hoses, seals, tires—they're all the result of compounding and curing. That's the honesty I'm looking for.

Bottom Line: Buy the Specification, Not the Price

I don't claim the Cooper Tire brand is the only rubber supplier that gets it right. But I do think it's a shortcut to the kind of thinking I want from vendors. The best rubber gasket in the world is the one with a known compound, tested performance limits, and no hidden pricing surprises.

So ask the hard questions before you order—not after the crack appears. What is this material made of? What can it withstand? What does the price actually include? If a vendor can't answer all three, it's not a purchase. It's a gamble.

There's something satisfying about opening a box and seeing every part labeled with compound, durometer, and lot number. Transparency, in other words. Trust me on this one: it's worth the extra phone call.
