Which One Should You Choose?
I'm the person who reviews every batch of extruded sheets and door components before our company releases them. Over the last four years, I've inspected roughly 1,200 deliveries—maybe 1,100, I'd have to check our QMS logs—of PVC foam board, WPC sheets, and co-extruded profiles. If you're trying to choose between WPC and PVC for a brown WPC door, a door frame WPC, or a WPC sliding door, this is based on what I actually approve and reject, not on sales brochures.
Here's the comparison framework I use: PVC foam board density, co-extrusion layer quality, real door performance, and the manufacturer's delivery record. The last one is the one most buyers forget, and it's often the most expensive mistake.
1. PVC Foam Board Density vs WPC Density: The First Spec I Check
Density is the fastest way to tell whether a sheet or profile belongs in a door frame or a wall panel. In our Q1 2025 incoming inspection, the PVC foam board density range we accept for interior wall panels is 0.55 to 0.65 g/cm³. For door frame WPC profiles, we require a minimum of 1.05 g/cm³ measured by ASTM D792. Those are different material classes, even though some suppliers use the phrase WPC PVC sheet loosely.
Low-density PVC foam board has its place. It's light, cuts cleanly, and has a smooth surface. But if you hang a solid-core door on a frame made from 0.55 g/cm³ PVC foam, the hinge screws will eventually work loose. I've seen it happen on a washroom door in a commercial building—the whole jamb flexed every time the door closed. The installed door frame WPC profile we replaced was, honestly, not much more expensive than the PVC alternative.
A high-density PVC foam board gets closer to WPC, but it still behaves differently. WPC contains wood fiber, which changes how the material handles load over time. For a WPC sliding door, the top track and bottom guide need a frame that doesn't creep under daily use. My experience says that's a WPC job, not a PVC foam board job.
One caveat: my experience is based on roughly 200 batches of door and sheet materials for interior and semi-outdoor projects. If you're working with a completely different extrusion process or extreme-temperature environment, your results might differ.
2. Co-Extruded WPC PVC Sheet vs Single-Layer: The Cap Layer Changes Everything
This is where a co extrusion sheet manufacturer earns the price difference. A co-extruded WPC PVC sheet has a dense outer cap layer bonded to a lighter core. The cap carries the color—including that brown WPC door finish—and gives the surface scratch and UV resistance. The core gives the sheet stiffness. Single-layer sheets are simpler, but they fade faster and show scratches sooner.
For a brown WPC door, the brown should be part of the cap layer, not a painted film. We measure cap thickness on first articles with a digital microscope. In Q3 2024, I rejected a batch because the cap layer was 0.1 mm instead of the agreed 0.4 mm. The supplier claimed it was within industry standard. Our contract didn't say industry—it said 0.4 mm minimum. They redid the whole run at their cost.
If a co extrusion sheet manufacturer cannot show you a written cap-layer spec and a density test report, I'd treat that as a red flag. It's not about being difficult; it's about having a standard that both sides can verify.
3. Brown WPC Door, Door Frame WPC, and WPC Sliding Door: Where Each Material Shines
Let's apply this to actual products.
Brown WPC Door
A brown WPC door benefits from co-extrusion because the wear layer is built in. The door surface is exposed to hands, keys, and cleaning chemicals. A single-layer PVC foam sheet with painted color won't hold up the same way. We use WPC sheets for the faces and a high-density frame for the edges. That combination has passed our 50,000-cycle hinge test.
Door Frame WPC
Door frame WPC should be dense enough to hold screws and stiff enough not to twist during installation. We specify 1.05 g/cm³ minimum and require the profile to stay within 1 mm over a 2.4 m length. Low-density PVC foam board fails this every time in our incoming checks. It's not that the material is bad—it's just not a structural frame material.
WPC Sliding Door
A WPC sliding door is heavier than a PVC one. That tells you the material is doing something. But the extra weight means the track and hangers have to be rated for it. If you're comparing a PVC sliding door against a WPC sliding door, include the hardware in the comparison. The lightest option isn't automatically the best one over a 2.5 m opening.
The result that surprised me: I assumed a dense PVC foam board could replace WPC in door frames. It held screws fine initially. But after a season of temperature swings, the screw holes wallowed out. The wood fiber in WPC gives the screws something to bite into. I didn't expect the difference to show up that fast.
4. Choosing a Co Extrusion Sheet Manufacturer: Delivery Certainty Is a Specification
Now the part that gets skipped in every material comparison. You can get the density right, the cap layer right, and the profile right—but if the factory ships late, your whole schedule shifts. In March 2024, we paid $2,800 extra for rush production of a WPC sliding door profile. The alternative was missing a $38,000 store opening. The rush fee was cheap.
I'm not saying the lowest-priced co extrusion sheet manufacturer is always late. But our supplier scorecard from 2024 showed a pattern: the three lowest quotes for custom profiles had an average delay of 11 days. The higher-priced supplier had zero delays. That certainty costs something, and in an emergency, it's worth paying for.
When I evaluate a co extrusion sheet manufacturer, I ask for four things:
- Density test report from the actual batch, not a generic datasheet
- Cap layer thickness specification and verification method
- Lead time guarantee with a date
- A penalty clause for late delivery
If a supplier hesitates on any of these, that's your answer.
Looking back, I should have added penalty clauses earlier. At the time, I didn't want to look difficult. Then a late PVC foam board batch cost us a $22,000 redo and pushed a project by three weeks. If I could redo that decision, I'd make the delivery date part of the contract, not a hope.
Which One Should You Choose?
If your project is a brown WPC door, a door frame WPC, or a WPC sliding door, choose WPC with a co-extruded cap layer and a verified density above 1.0 g/cm³. Use PVC foam board where weight and flatness matter more than impact and screw holding—wall panels, false ceilings, displays.
If your timeline is tight, weigh delivery reliability more heavily than unit price. An uncertain cheap delivery is more expensive than a certain premium one. I've learned that lesson in the field, not in a procurement seminar.
This comparison is based on my work with about 200 mid-range projects, mostly in temperatures between -5°C and 40°C. If you're building for extreme heat, cold, or coastal salt exposure, get test data for those conditions before you finalize the material spec.
